REFERRAL COUNSELOR (Legal Non-Profit)

Remote work opportunity -Full-time

THE POSITION

Established in 1946, the New York City Bar Legal Referral Service (LRS) is the oldest lawyer referral service in New York State, and the first one in New York City approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).Reporting to the Supervising Attorney, the ReferralCounselor willjoin a team ofcounselors,contributingtoour longstanding commitment and service.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY include, but are not limited to:
  • Respond to high volume of calls and emails from thegeneral public
  • Triage legal issues and direct clients toparticipatinglawyers and other legal resources
  • Provide basic legal information to the public
  • Assistingthe department with othersecondaryduties,such asassistingwith recruiting lawyers to join the service,lightresearchfor our legaltopicswebpages,assistingwithgrass roots marketingand recruiting research,public relationsat public events,etc.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS
  • Astronginterest inhelping the public byworking inalegal,nonprofitsetting
  • A learning mindset andcuriosityabout topics thatimpactthe profession, law, and helping the public,such aschanges tothe law,nonprofits’strategicuse oftechnology toboost efficiencies inprovidinghelptothepublic,andevolvingdelivery of legal servicesmodelsGeneral knowledge of New York law and legal resources available to New Yorkers, preferred
  • BilingualfluencyintheEnglishlanguage (spoken and written),and Spanish language(spokenrequired, written preferred)
  • At least one year of employment in a legal environment/organization
  • Excellent phone manner, customerserviceand written/verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to deal effectively with challenging individuals
  • Ability to staycalm in stressful situations
  • Abilitytousemultiple windows and/or computer programs simultaneouslyandefficiently
  • Strong PC skills, including Microsoft Office 365products(principally,Outlook, Word, OneDrive,andTeams),Zoom,VOIP orsoft-phone technologies, and basic web-basedprograms.Familiarity with or ability to use other O365 apps with little training(such as SharePoint, Excel, One Note, and CoPilot)wouldbe aplus.
  • This position is open to thoseresidingin the Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones of the U.S.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Starting compensation is $30.22 - $32.97 per hour (based on experience), which is equivalent to an annualized salary range of $55,000 - $60,000 for full-time employment (generally 35hours per week).

The LRS Department at the City Bar is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and is closed daily from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Assigned work schedules mayvary, andstart and end times will bedeterminedbased on operational needs.
